Industrial Air Pollution
Allegheny County ranks in the top 1 percent of counties in the U.S. for cancer risk from air pollution. Clairton Coke Works is the source of approximately 60% of the county’s industrial air pollution.
Coke Oven Emissions
The plant emits harmful substances like benzene, ethylbenzene, napthalene and others. These emissions are linked to various health issues including COPD, lung function decline, hypertension, cancers, and neurobehavioral function decline.
Local Health Effects
Clairton children have three times the national average rate of childhood asthma. The estimated excess lifetime cancer risk near Clairton Coke Works is 2.3 times higher than EPA's acceptable risk.
